Abstract

Sonemics II is an audiovisual work for live video and spatial sound made in 2013 in response to a commission from Glasgow's Tramway. It is a collaboration with film maker Kate Burton and is one of a series of live audiovisual pieces. It was performed at Tramway in April 2013 on the 25th anniversary of the opening of Tramway as an arts venue, as part of a weekend of sonic art featuring David Toop and Scanner. The piece was designed specifically for the Tramway 1 space, making use of its ‘red wall’ for projection. Visual materials were designed to take advantage of the red wall’s uneven texture and tone. The audio material was built up from a mixture of field recordings and pre-recorded concrète and synthesised sources. Sound and film are performed together, in a using live cutting and playhead ‘scrubbing’. The first five minutes comprises fixed digital film with live soundtrack, then the film is chopped and stretched, overlaid with a broader range of spatialised audio materials.
