Abstract

The concept of authenticity is in flux (Lowenthal 1995). It is a complex notion to pin down and often takes on different nuances and applications in successive contexts. This paper presents one approach for the clarification of the concept of authenticity in relation to Contemporary Art. It introduces the idea of an artwork’s ‘critical mass’ which provides a core of continuity that transcends inevitable material and contextual variation. This philosophical framework will be explored in relation to the various incarnations of an installation by the artist Ross Sinclair, Journey to the Edge of the World – The New Republic of St Kilda, 1999-2002.
