This article assesses the current state of the art in the design of traditional uni-direction fibre architecture; beyond the ubiquitous balanced and symmetric design rule. A ply termination algorithm is then employed to develop permissible tapered designs, free from undesirable changes in mechanical coupling characteristics and with immunity to thermal warping distortion. Finally, bi-angle and multi-layer NCF designs are identified.
