Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of software engineering for open distributed environments based upon the integration of independent software components with the objective of maximizing reuse and promoting extensibility. We propose a schema-based abstract model of integration that provides strong type-checking and employs anonymous multicast communication. The object-based architecture provides a uniform model of cooperation for objects with different granularities that is applicable to general purpose distributed system services such as the Common Object Request Broker specified by the OMG [18], as well as to domain specific tool integration architectures such as those for CASE and CAD.
