Abstract

Cardiac disease is the third biggest cause of mortality following neoplasia and “old age” in dogs, and accounts for a significant proportion of the small animal cases that are seen in veterinary practice [1]. However, cardiac disease is not synonymous with cardiac failure, and many animal patients may have cardiac disease but remain without clinical signs of heart failure (HF) throughout their lives. Close monitoring of a patient with known cardiac disease is essential in order to assess any progression to clinical signs that are consistent with HF.
