Abstract

The events in Russia’s Baltic provinces did not meet Lenin’s definition of the 1905 Revolution as a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the October revolution of 1917 because, during the First World War, much of the territory in question was under German military occupation and not in a position to participate in the great upheaval in Russia. To that extent, the revolution in the Baltic provinces is a feature peculiar to the 1905 Revolution and is worthy of study on that account. The scope of the present chapter is an examination of the developments in those provinces of the Russian Empire that would later constitute the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, focusing in particular on the workers’ and peasants’ movement and on the part played by national aspirations.
