Abstract

Description of project: This is one of a range of traditional outputs and KT benefit from a year-long research project into rural arts touring Scotland. It represents research that was originated by the authors but that also contributed a literature review, data, data analysis and commentary to a research project led by cultural policy researchers and publishers Comedia. That project, 'Rural Virtues', explored theatre provision in rural England and Wales and was commissioned by the National Rural Touring Forum. The output submitted here was separately funded and managed, with critical and contextual purchase beyond that of Comedia's commissioned work that focused exclusively on England and Wales. Rationale/questions: Focusing on rural arts touring in Scotland the research aimed to identify the social, cultural and to a lesser extent economic outcomes of rural arts touring schemes; to assess the impact of rural touring (particularly theatre) on community development and arts practice; and, to make recommendations to enhance rural touring arts across Scotland. Methods/approaches: The research used a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with key participants and observers, focus groups and participant observation, being further supported by documentary research in Scotland and beyond. The co-authors and one research assistant undertook the literature review, the fieldwork and data analysis. Based on these research findings, Scullion was responsible for writing hte whole report and other written outputs - not submitted here - including essays in the referred press.
