Abstract

A short story set in the DRC. There is some dispute regarding the death toll in the Democratic Republic of Congo from the ongoing wars. Some estimates are as low as 2.5 million and some are as high as 7. Who to believe? And did I just say ‘as low as 2.5 million?’ Stalin said, ‘The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic.’ So, sticking with story and anecdote this is a monologue from the point of view of a young woman who lives in war torn North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. To reinforce the universality of her situation I’ve decided to render her voice as that of a Glaswegian woman.
