Abstract

This volume, which has been commissioned by the Presses universitaires de la Sorbonne, provides the first ever annotated critical edition of Jean d’Ardenne’s articles on prominent contemporary writers such as : Baudelaire, Flaubert, Mallarmé, Mérimée, Lamartine, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, Théodore de Banville, Leconte de Lisle, Maeterlinck, Zola etc. Jean d’Ardenne, a friend of Victor Hugo and Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, was a leading figure in Belgium journalism and a great supporter of Realism and Naturalism in literature. This critical edition which includes an introduction, critical annotations and a full bibliography is published in the famous collection « Mémoire de la critique ». Most of these documents (from 1864 to 1912) will be published for the first time and will cast a new light on the relationship between journalism and literature, including new documents on the reception of symbolism, Baudelaire’s poetry and visual arts of the art fin-de-siècle.
