Abstract

A comparative study of Matura's 'The Playboy of the West Indies' and Synge's 'The Playboy of the Western World' is done in order to show that the desperate desire to forget conflicting and conflicted histories remains a threat to national unity. Both the plays offer a less deterministic relationship between past and present, old World and New World, and point the steer of the people in the direction of imagining a spatialized critical language for understanding how to refigure old grievances and foster new affiliations.
