Abstract
Article on Portuguese as a Foreign Language teaching methodology. Learner of Portuguese as a Foreign Language often battle with the pronunciation. The author has found that there is a direct link between deficient pronunciation and contamination from written Portuguese (like English, Portuguese is not pronounced exactly as it is spelled). The variation of successful attainment of correct pronunciation is further affected by the variation of native-like command of English (the medium used to teach Portuguese) and mother-tongue. The author proposes a new methodology inspired on the Early Literacy methods of Phonics, where learners are exposed to Portuguese phonetics and encouraged to match this with a personal phonic metalanguage. The results are inspiring, and students demonstrate a greater awareness of correct pronunciation, are able to exert a higher level of self-correction throughout the teaching session, and feel more encouraged to participate in the class.
