Abstract
A re-evaluation of the impact this hugely influential writer/publicist had outside the English-speaking world, both in revolutionary France (where he was elected as deputy but quickly became marginalised) and in other parts of continental Europe (where translation of his main works was very uneven, and where his reputation was either minimal or severely challenged).
