Abstract

This article looks into the responses by the French communist party (Parti communiste français, PCF) to the Czechoslovak crisis of 1968. It combines an analysis of the day-to-day debates in and surrounding the party, based on primary sources including party archives and published material, with an attempt to contextualise this episode in the longer-term history not only of the party itself, but also of the European Cold War on the one hand, and the history of the European Marxist left on the other.
