Abstract
Explores the debate surrounding where sculpture should be preserved and the issues that stem from the practice of retain it in situ or in association with its historical findspot. The starting point is the polar views of General Pitt Rivers, Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Britain and Joseph Anderson, Keeper of the National Museum of Antiquities at the end of the 19th century, progressing to present day policies and practice.
