Abstract

This work explores the creative processes of the American-born artist, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), as etcher and printer. The evolution of 500 etchings, from copper plate to finished print, provides a unique picture of a working artist. Whistler's choice of subject, composition and materials, the identification of sites and sitters, plus the exhibition, publication, marketing and collection of his etchings, is fully explored for the first time, in the context of the art market in Europe and America 1855-1905. We have recorded 9500 impressions of 500 etchings, plus some 300 surviving copper plates. We identify the different states of these 500 etchings (from one to 20 states) and will reproduce images of all these states as well as distinctive printing techniques, the recto and verso of copper plates; and comparative images of sites, sitters and works by other artists.
