Abstract

This chapter explains that the focus of the book is on contemporary issues in learning and teaching and that in exploring these issues, a wider perspective has been been adopted, involving a consideration of the factors that shape the practice of teachers and the experiences of children and young people in classrooms today. This requires an exploration of the landscape of education, where wider sociopolitical and economic trends are having a profound influence on the priorities identified for education, where research has led to an explosion in our knowledge about the nature of learning and where there have been significant changes in what is expected of teachers.
