Abstract

This chapter examines the role played by Pompeii in one of the most signficant landmarks in modernist Cinema, Rossellini's Journey to Italy (1954). Reading the film as a moment in the reception of Pomepeii enables the strange happy ending of the film to be better understood. The chapter argues that the film is important testimony to the ambiguous quality of Pompeii in the popular imagination.
