Abstract

In deference to the theme of the Profiles in Power series, Swain has focused this biographical examination of Leon Trotsky on the years the Bolshevik leader was either in power or on its fringes. Such an approach leads to some starkly different conclusions than earlier Trotsky scholarship, including Swain's argument that Trotsky was hardly the world revolutionist of earlier biographies, only coming to critique Stalin's "socialism in one country" because it made too many concessions to the peasantry.
