Abstract

The article offers a detailed analysis of two early-to-mid-19th century subscriber lists, found in the poetry collections of two Argyllshire poets (one based in Glasgow, the other periodically resident in Edinburgh). It examines the demographical data given in the lists and outlines the inferences that can be drawn regarding Gaelic literacy at the time (a period marked by the birth of Gaelic journalism and the spread of Gaelic schools) and regarding the social networks operating between Argyllshire and the urban Gaelic communities.
