Abstract

Photonic crystals continue to provide a fertile terrain for research effort around the world. Periodic refractive-index variation in two or three spatial dimensions, with a large high-low ratio produces a range of interesting phenomena that offer a variety of possibilities for device functionality. This chapter will introduce some of the basic concepts and the terminology required in order to understand the behaviour of photonic crystals.
