Abstract

Although trainees are traditionally associated with intensive training programmes such as CELTA or CTESOL there are large numbers who choose another route: the Masters programme in TESOL. This presentation describes how on master’s programme was designed and how it caters for trainees with little or no previous teaching experience. Outline: Why do some initial trainees opt for a Masters degree rather than a short intensive programme? (more prestigious qualification, more likely to get a better job, better opportunity to learn more about English language and culture) In which areas of the programme do these trainees need support? (language awareness; practical teaching experience; reflection) Language awareness – module on descriptions of language with a focus on discourse, lexis and phonology Practical teaching experience – taking on ‘teacherly roles’; emotions; team planning and teaching; peer teaching; watching recordings of classroom teaching by professionals Reflection – on sessions and their teaching experiences; reflecting not only on the negative but what they also did well and what they’ve learned from the experience
