Abstract

The University of Glasgow has recently opened a new learning and teaching building, the James McCune Smith Learning Hub. This new building, a part of a wider campus redevelopment plan, allows the University to adopt new, innovative practices in learning and teaching by providing agile, modern teaching spaces. In particular, the building – and the philosophy underpinning the building’s design – looks to foster and encourage shifts in pedagogy towards digital, active, blended, accessible and sustainable teaching and learning. This talk explores the ways in which teams of Academic Developers and Learning Developers worked to embed active learning pedagogies and practice. In particular, the talk highlights the underlying strategy/philosophy, and subsequently the work undertaken by Academic Developers in developing, embedding and supporting new practice around active learning and technology in the classroom. The discussion also focuses on the work undertaken by the team of Learning Developers in preparing and equipping students for new pedagogical approaches. This combined talk, then, presents an overview of an institution-wide adoption of active blended, digital and sustainable pedagogies
