Abstract
An historical contribution to arguments around a contemporary proposal for an ecumenical bishop in south-east Wales. I argue that bishops operated in the area where the proposed ecumenical bishop would have served in rather more complex and untidy ways than we might imagine and some Church historians have wished to make out.
