Abstract

This case report describes the surgical therapy of an adrenal gland adenocarcinoma with symptoms of hyperadrenocorticism in a four-year-old, neutered male ferret that did not respond to conservative hormonal treatment. The adrenal gland disease was verified by abdominal ultrasound and treated with a subcutaneous deslorelin implant (Suprelorin 9.4 mg ad us. vet., Virbac). Four months after the implantation, the patient showed no improvement of its symptoms and its left adrenal gland had increased in size. Due to this situation, an inadequate response to the deslorelin chip was suspected. After successful extirpation of the neoplastic adrenal gland, the symptoms disappeared. Normally, ferrets respond very well to hormonal therapy and non-responders are rarely described in the literature. Although therapy with a GnRH analogue can have advantages over surgical therapy, this case demonstrates that extirpation of an abnormal adrenal gland should be considered as a therapeutic option.
