Abstract

Shortlisted for the Adelio Ferrero video essay award, 2021. This video constitutes a sequel to my explanatory video essay 'The L/Song Take in Before Sunrise' (shortlisted for the 2019 Adelio Ferrero video essay award). 'Long Take, Pop Song', the song, is a musical response to the original video essay, operating in the same folk-pop style as Kath Bloom's 'Come Here', the song played during the record-store scene that is critiqued in the original video essay. 'Long Take, Pop Song', the video, refers to the original video essay, but also acts as a fan remix/comic book version of the much-loved Before Trilogy. Maybe this is the first original song/music video/video essay crossover? In any case, it's my attempt to create what Catherine Grant calls "film studies in the groove", an experimental critical form that "may have much to teach us, if we can only let ourselves be carried away." The song and video are related to Indy Vinyl, my research project on record playing in American Independent Cinema. The project website is here: www.indyvinyl.gla.ac.uk
