Abstract
Reduced self-control is a strong predictor of overeating and obesity. Priming a higher construal mind-set has been shown to enhance self-control and reduce snack consumption in the lab. However the long-term and real-world effects are not known. The use of digital technology is an efficient way to deliver such self-control primes in real-world settings in the longer term. There are many mobile apps to support healthy eating, however few are grounded in psychological theories of self-control. The main aim was to develop and test the feasibility of a novel, evidence-based mobile app that uses construal level theory to promote healthier eating. Using an iterative process involving users at every stage of the process, a prototype mobile app was developed with four specifications: 1) A high level construal mind-set task with personalised responses; 2) Personalised reminders before each eating occasion to motivate healthier food choices; 3) A daily food log; and 4) A just-in time ‘crave buster’ for unanticipated eating opportunities. The app is currently being tested in a pre-registered feasibility trial over an eight-week period. The main aim is to test the usability of the app over time. A secondary aim is to examine food intake and weight pre- and post- app use. In an exploratory analysis the moderating influences of important demographic and personality characteristics will be examined. The challenging interdisciplinary app development process and user outcomes will be presented. Findings can be used to inform future mobile app development in this area.
