Abstract

Naphthalene substituted pyridinium urea and amide 1 and 2 have been designed and synthesized respectively, of which compound 1 served as potential chemosensor for fluorometric detection of I− ions both in organic and semi-aqueous medium. We found that while basic anions cause deprotonation of the urea and amide H-bonds, iodide forms weak hydrogen bonds in 1 as established by spectroscopic and theoretical studies. This makes it more suitable to produce charge transfer complex than 2 and enables it to act as a selective sensor for iodide ions.
