Abstract

This paper contributes to debates in project management about how social interactions can secure smoother information exchange and knowledge flow in order to facilitate enhanced stakeholder alignment and returns. The research findings can assist project managers in understanding and managing the sources of fuzziness and creating enduring front-end value. A project’s front-end is increasingly seen as critical to potential value accrual. Project stakeholders and the project itself accrue, or possibly shed, value as soon as a project is mooted/initiated. The paper adopts a social capital perspective to provide a deeper understanding of front-end project management; it employs a three-dimensional view (structural, relational, cognitive) to explore how stakeholders’ social capital can cut through the fuzziness associated with the front-end to enhance decision-making and value creation. More than 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior/experienced managers and combined with secondary data to establish the impact, nature and dimensions of social capital within three telecommunication companies. Keywords Front-end fuzziness, social capital, stakeholder value, project management, social networks, value creation
