Abstract

This chapter addresses the contribution made by an influential group of Scottish artists to the development of large-scale painted scenery during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, both as theatre painting, in the form of theatrical painted cloths, but also via the panorama, patented in 1787 by the Irish artist and entrepreneur Robert Barker (1739–1806).
