Abstract

This paper shows a modelling framework for simulation of thermal effect on the fracture behavior of a clay-rich sandstone. The framework was based on the particulate discrete element method (DEM), combined with a coupled thermal-mechanical scheme. Pure mode I and mode II, and mixed-mode (I+II) fracture toughness of the rock was measured under elevated temperatures (up to 600C) using the ISRM-suggested semi-circular bend (SCB) specimens. The simulation results were validated against analytical predictions
