Argues against assertions that apocalyptic was a good starting point for the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Surveys the gulf the Christian Church had to overcome in terms of type for religion,; funerary ritual and afterlife belief; nature and make-up of the soul; judgment; the souls of pagan ancestors; and concepts of time.
