Abstract

In response to an overwhelming xenophobia, racism and anti-refugee emotions in the Czech Republic, Jan Hamáček, the Czech Social Democratic (!) Home Secretary, refused to respond positively to a request by the Greek government, asking the Czech Republic to accept 40 (!) unaccompanied refugee children. Jan Čulík talks to Jaroslav Miko from the Češi pomáhají (The Czechs Help) initiative who frequently visits the refugee camps on the Greek islands, where asylum seekers live in dire conditions while Europe looks away. Jaroslav Miko is trying to persuade Hamáček and other members of the Czech government to accept the refugee children from Greece. The interview was broadcast on the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 20th December 2019.
