Abstract

This small scale project explores the journeys made by student teachers of art and design during their PGDE year. The project seeks to understand the extent to which teacher education supports them to develop knowledge of art practices, potentials and pedagogies. It also seeks to explore the ways in which we might better support reflection on their development as teachers of art and design. In this way, the students who participate will benefit from considerations of their own learning, from which they can develop further their professional understandings of practice, theory and impact on learning. We also wish to explore the ways in which their practices as artists influence their approaches to teaching. This area is underexplored to date but holds potential for supporting teachers of other subjects to rethink their approaches to the use of artefacts, the self of the teacher as a resource, space, classroom discourse and creative approaches to pedagogies and lesson structure and planning.
