Abstract

This talk will focus on the introduction of an integrated reading into writing assessment for an English for Academic Purposes pre-sessional bridging course for non-native students in Bio-medical science at The University of Glasgow. Integrating skills has long been a challenge for EAP students and there is a growing recognition that ‘reading into writing’ is one of the key skills required for success at university as students need to assimilate what they read into their academic writing. Whilst the development and design of course materials acknowledges the importance of these skills, the use of integrated skills in assessment in class tests is still at the developmental stage. We want to ensure that assessment reflects the pre-sessional course content and to better prepare students with core academic skills that best equip them for successful achievement in their academic careers. In this talk, I will provide a more informed definition of integrated reading into writing skills based on available literature and discuss the implementation process, focusing on the integrated task features that influenced our assessment task design including authenticity of task and developing academic integrity. I will talk about feedback from students and teachers, look at what we have learned from this process including improving our course task design and assessment outcomes for the future. Finally, I will discuss how we plan to introduce integrated skills assessment across different bridging courses and skills sets before reflecting on our understanding of assessment criteria.
