Abstract

The importance of collaboration, critical thinking and reflective learning are key cornerstones of tertiary study often held as indicators of successful outcomes in HE settings. But what assumptions do HE practitioners make about student competence and experience with these fundamental elements of tertiary study? This presentation evaluates the implementation of a framework of student-led out-of-class task creation with a group of Level 1 undergraduate students making the transition from secondary to tertiary study. It traces the developments in collaborative task design and poses questions about the expectations placed on students making transitions between learning environments. In doing so, the talk hopes to encourage HE practitioners to reflect on the assumptions made regarding student competence and experience with independent learning and explore opportunities for closer collaboration between secondary and tertiary stakeholders in order to better manage transitions between learning contexts.
