Abstract

During the academic year 2017/18 several projects at the University of Glasgow explored the situation of our GTAs. One of the projects involved an extensive questionnaire, not only asking for GTAs remits and their experience of training and CPD, but also looked into graduate attributes and their impact on our GTAs, we ran focus groups, a GTA symposium and developed a subject specific GTA induction with one of the schools. The support for GTAs varies largely across the institution while some schools offer mentoring and peer support, as well as ongoing training. Other schools have no development in place beyond LEADS (Learning Enhancement and Academic Development Service) three-hour generic induction. The key training GTAs asked for was guidance and support with marking and subject and environment specific teaching methods. This led to a pilot induction session developed by colleagues from LEADS in collaboration with heads of year in a school to support their GTAs with discipline specific teaching methods. There needs to be more work done to develop supporting GTAs with marking.
