Abstract

The oxygen K-edge of a range of perovskite (ABO(3)) materials has been investigated using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), where A = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb and B = Ti, Zr. These substitutions strongly affect the ferroelectric properties of the materials as the bonding and symmetry present in each unit cell is altered due to the increasing size of the cations and the stresses that result. These alterations also affect the electronic structure of the materials, which has been modelled using band structure and multiple scattering methods in order to interpret better the EELS data.
