Abstract

Marking the 30th anniversary of the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia, this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival decided to screen a number of Czech feature films made in 1989-1990. These films basically disappeared without trace in the 1990s, because in the early years of the post-communist era no one was interested in the characteristics of the ancient regime any longer. But the "values" of the late communist era re-emerged with a vengeance in the post-communist era. People who now demonstrate against the semi-authoritarian Czech PM Andrej Babiš would be stunned to see those thirty-year films, which are a passionate protest against the pathological behaviour of powerful members of society. The films actually deal with many of the problems that affect Czech society now. In this TV interview, broadcast by Regionalnitelevize.cz from 28th June, 2019, filmmaker Dominika Švecová interviews Jan Čulík about these films. He talks about them using his analysis of these films, published in his academic monographs about Czech cinema, Jací jsme (2007) and A Society in Distress (2013).
