The purpose of this chapter is to provide insights into the historical context and the process that led to the Education (Scotland) Act, 1918. The Christian denominations were very influential in the development of school education in Scotland and were offered the opportunity to be accommodated within a state system of schooling in the Education (Scotland) Act, 1872. The Catholic and Episcopal churches refused and after a series of protracted and complex negotiations, the Education (Scotland) Act, 1918, provided a further opportunity that was accepted by both churches, but the integration of the Catholic schools was slower than might have been expected. A number of important themes are highlighted in this chapter including the training of Catholic teachers, the service to the poor and the role of the religious orders and congregations.
