Abstract

The last webinar, titled ‘EAP: Telecollaboration with the Global South’ took place on 14th March. The speakers were Bill Guariento and Anna Rolinska: Glasgow’s telecollaborative project-based pre-sessional English course enables our students to link up each summer with peers in Palestine and Chile, enhancing language / problem-solving / team-working skills and intercultural awareness. It has also brought broader institutional benefits, namely relationship-building, and the arrival of 30 fully-funded Erasmus+ students from Gaza last year. We hope this webinar may help other pre-sessional providers who are interested in setting up similar links to the Global South. And Will Hutton and Daniela Nogueira de Moraes Garcia: Students from Queen Mary University of London and UNESP-Assis (São Paulo State University) have worked together on a structured intervention using a tandem learning approach on five occasions since 2016. Underpinned by the principles of reciprocity and autonomy which inform Teletandem Brasil, the project has sought to bring university students who are geographically dispersed together in order to develop both their skills in English as an Academic Lingua Franca (ELFA) and their global awareness. It is hoped that this webinar will be of interest to those who are interested in designing effective telecollaborative learning collaborations in a higher education context.
