Abstract
This article discusses the possibility of a Freirean approach to critical literacy for Scottish women prisoners within the Scottish Prison Service. The approach being proposed could achieve dual outcomes. The first would be the achievement of basic skills that would still allow the prison to meet key performance targets in relation to prisoner literacy levels. The second outcome would be the empowerment of women prisoners, beginning with personal empowerment and ending in collective empowerment.
