Abstract

Although implementation of lean production has been widely spread, it has been noted that there is a gap in the current literature regarding studies that consider implementation of lean production from a regional context. Hence, the presented study addresses the impact and contingencies of regional context on the implementation of lean production. More specifically , the results of two case studies that were conducted in the United Kingdom are presented and discussed. The data collection included in depth semi -structured interviews with the managers and employees of the selected companies as well as observations of t heir processes. The results show that the regional context does in some degree impact the implementation of lean production and therefore the operational performance of the company. This research study attempts to cover the shortcomings of previous studies that have not covered the issue in detail and provides empirical evidence that adds new insight to the current literature in regard to successful implementation of lean production. Hence, the findings give direction to managers about different dimensions that contribute to the successful implementation of lean production.
