Abstract

Digital storytelling is an approach used around the world for teaching a variety of subjects. In media education in the UK however, digital storytelling is not so widely used as a pedagogical approach. Digital storytelling involves interweaving digital content with the art of storytelling. It is an approach that can be seen as appropriate for conveying a range of different information including: personal narratives; historical events that help us understand the past; and stories that inform or instruct us on a particular concept or practice (Robin, 2016). When it comes to digital literacy (i.e. the ability to understand and use information in multiple formats and apply critical thinking to that process), it can be argued that those in Media Education are well-equipped to use digital storytelling in their pedagogical practice. However it appears that this knowledge may be an "unknown known" (Zizek, 2006) for academics in the media educators and therefore it gets overlooked when it comes to using it as a teaching tool. This paper explores how digital storytelling can be seen as a perfect fit for media education. It is an approach that can be used: in the design and delivery of teaching; for students to reflect on their learning through the creation of digital stories; and embedded into assessment design. This paper also examines digital literacy frameworks, investigates the awareness of media educators of the relevance of digital literacy to their discipline, as well as examining how their knowledge might be applied to enhance their pedagogical practice.
