Abstract
Synopsis: my one, and currently only, encounter with an American mink on my driveway had a profound effect on my attitude to the species. To me as an ecologist they were an alien species causing devastation in an ecosystem that wasn’t designed for them. However, when I was able to examine its lifeless body, I realised what a remarkable animal it was and briefly understood the historic demand for its fur. I also came to acknowledge that sometimes we have to correct our mistakes and this may be in the form of culling one species to save others.
