Abstract

In the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba faced a serious economic crisis which decimated its economy. Yaffe examines astonishing developments that took place during and beyond this period. Drawing on archival research and interviews with Cuban leaders, thinkers and activists, this book tells the remarkable story of how Cuban socialism survived while the rest of the Soviet bloc transitioned to capitalism. We are Cuba explains how and why market reforms have been permitted in parts of the Cuban economy. The government claims these are necessary to sustain its socialist system, while many believe they herald a return to capitalism. Examining key domestic initiatives, including the creation of a world-leading biotechnology industry, an energy revolution and expanding medical internationalism, alongside structural changes, Yaffe shows why Cuba’s socialist revolution continues post-Castro. We are Cuba is a fresh, definitive account of developments in Cuba and the coming challenges it faces on the 60th anniversary of the Revolution.
