Abstract

In March 1950, the Czech-French writer Milan Kundera, then a Prague Film Academy student, allegedly reported to the police the existence of a strange suitcase in the dormitory room of one of his student friends, Iva Militká. Militká provided more information to the Czechoslovak communist police and so they arrested a returned defector, a CIA agent, Miroslav Dvořáček, who then spentmany years in a communist labour camp. Jan Čulík interviews Karen von Kunes, Professor of Czech Studies at Yale University, who has just written a monograph on Kundera, arguing that his entanglement with the arrest of Dvořáček has deeply influenced all his literary work and there are references to the incident in all Kundera novels. The interview was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 3rd August 2018.
