Abstract

Colours of Ostrava, which takes place in July in the steel-making Czech city of Ostrava, is a major music festival in the Czech Republic. It is attended by some 50 000 people. The festival is financially sponsored by Agrofert, a giant food processing company owned by the controversial Czech oligarch and current Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, a former communist secret agent who is investigated by the EU for financial fraud. The other sponsor of the festival is the global steel-making firm Arceol Mittal which grossly damages the environment in the Ostrava region of the Czech Republic. Is it acceptable to participate in such a festival under these circumstances? Both Babiš and a wide range of Czech opposition politicians and activists take part. Britské listy analyst Bohumil Kartous was invited to take part in a number of discussions which took place in the adjoining "Melting Pot" programme and he argues that it is important to criticise Babiš and his policies at events which he actually attends. The interview with Jan Čulík was broadcast by the Czech cable TV station Regionalnitelevize.cz from 27th July 2018.
