Abstract

Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE; watermelon stomach) is a rare but increasingly recognized cause of chronic gastrointestinal blood loss and iron deficiency anaemia and, rarely, life-threatening haemorrhage. Treatment modalities include endoscopic, pharmacological and surgical approaches; however, many patients remain transfusion dependent. Thalidomide has previously been shown to exert a potent antiangiogenic effect in experimental studies [1], its therapeutic role in gastrointestinal bleeding associated with vascular ectasia and angiodysplasia, however, remains unclear. We successfully treated a patient with refractory anaemia secondary to GAVE with thalidomide.
