Abstract

Abstract: We respond to a paper entitled "When morphology meets molecular data in crinoid phylogeny: a challenge" by giving an account of our understanding of the relations between morphology-based classification and molecular phylogeny. We then comment on ten passages from the challenge paper, briefly explaining why we consider each to be incoherent or wrong. Finally we comment critically on the unorthodox treatment of heterochrony revealed in that paper, and in other papers by the same authors. Our discussion includes observations on the role of heterodox thinking, and the importance of not giving standard terms cryptic, unorthodox meanings. <br/> <br/> Résumé : Phylogénie des Crinoïdes : réponse à un défi. Nous répondons au papier intitulé "When morphology meets molecular data in crinoid phylogeny: a challenge" en expliquant notre compréhension des relations entre la classification morphologique et la phylogénèse moléculaire. Puis nous commentons dix extraits du papier, en expliquant brièvement pourquoi nous considérons comme incohérent ou inexact dans chaque extrait. Enfin, nous critiquons le traitement hétérodoxe de l'hétérochronie dans l'article et dans d'autres papiers de ces mêmes auteurs. Notre débat porte sur le rôle de la pensée hétérodoxe et l'importance de ne pas donner aux termes standards des significations énigmatiques ou hétérodoxes.
