Abstract

Firms have to engage in aggressive competitive behavior to win the market. But how such competitive behavior enhances firm performance is related to firm ownership. Specifically, we argue that: (1) private ownership can better enable the transfer of aggressive behavior to enhance performance than state ownership; (2) full ownership can better enable the transfer of aggressive behavior to enhance performance than partial ownership (i.e., joint ventures). We find support for these arguments in empirical tests on survey-based data of 106 firms in China.
